I am sure just like me, a lot of you are also apprehensive about the upcoming appraisal meeting. But do remember that it’s important for you learn what not to talk about during this meeting. It’s a crucial meeting, so be smart and avoid doing bringing up these topics while your boss discusses your appraisal with you.
Don’t over-emphasise on your producutivity: We all work. Some really work hard and some don’t so when you have that special talk with your boss, keep it professional. Do not use words like ‘I worked super-duper hard for this project’ or ‘I was the best in the team’. Avoid such statements.
Do not argue: Appraisal meeting not only implies speaking your mind but also listening to the boss. If you do not agree, raise your point but do not continue arguing. It will make your boss feel insulted and we bet you don’t want to do that in an appraisal meeting.
Do not blame others: Things do go wrong. That’s how the world works. If it happens with you, accept it. Don’t blame other colleagues and talk negatively. Simply avoid this one.
Don’t be an emotional fool: Do not, not, not cry! In case your boss brings up some of your errors, be graceful and accept it. Crying will make you look unprofessional and weak. We know you don’t want to be called a crying baby.
Don’t lose focus: When you talk about your work, do not lose your focus and do not talk random things. If needed make notes of the points you wish to talk about with your boss. Keep your personal issues aside.
Honesty is the best policy, sometimes: We all know we work only for money but still using this language can get you in a soup. Do not say that you are here only for money; it gives an absolutely wrong impression of you and all your hard work will go down the drain. Talk about finances, talk about your expectation and back it up with proof of the work you have done. Be diplomatic and discreet when you talk about your work. Choose your words wisely.
